Hineaka Winiata Te Whaaro is the last living mokopuna of Winiata Te Whaaro, who, at her 90th birthday in March (2024) hoped she would be like her two senior first-cousins, Kathy James and Waina Hoete Ahipene and reach the grand age of 100. This young kuia is bound to get there, as she is still spritely, fit and ever ready to support hapū and iwi kaupapa – whether it be attending Waitangi Tribunal matters, social events, tangihanga or worthy protests!
We caught her unprepared (so she wouldn’t sneak away), and she kindly accepted the tono (request) to answer a few questions. Listen to some of the gems she has for us.
